Yakumamay live Pharmacy

Yakumamay is an innovative Amazonian conservation project based near the city of Iquitos in the Loreto region of Peru. Founded in 1996 Yakumamay has pioneered community led conservation of forest resources and the development of Live Pharmacies.

Yakumamay Live Pharmacy is managed by the residents of two communities in collaboration with anthropologists from the University of Cambridge, England. In addition to managing the reserve the communities now welcome visitors in small numbers

Live Pharmacy

Live Pharamacies (a continuum of wild and semi-domesticate medicinal plants in nature reserves and medicinal gardens), are a highly effective way of promoting forest conservation and sustainable use of forest resources in ways that make sense to residents in Amazonian forest communities.

Since 2004 Yakumamay has undergone many changes, but visitors can still access the garden site. The Allpahuayo Mishana National Forest Reserve, beyond the edges of the Triunfo and Nuevo Triunfo communities, is easily accessed from the Iquitos-Nauta Highway. The main entrance is at Km 28, but local guides can accompany visitors along forest paths from Km 45 and Km 47. Access is also possible by boat from the Bellavista port on the Nanay river
